Bringing a puppy home is a fun and exciting time, but it can also be a little stressful. If this is your first puppy, it has been years since you last brought a puppy home, or you have had a problem dog in the past, you may be a little nervous. So let's get ready!!!
Having safe places for your puppy! Puppies are wonderful, adorable and fun, but let's be honest - they also can be (unintentionally) destructive. Consider how you are going to keep your eyes on your puppy on all times and where they are going to be when you can't have your eyes on them. For night time and naps, I do recommend a crate. You need a safe, happy place for them to go to bed and to have some unwind time. I also use an exercise pen for times like when I am watching my puppy, but not able to 100% focus on them. I recommend one that is at least 30 inches high since puppies frequently learn to climb the 24" ones by the time they are 10-12 weeks old. Knowing where your safe places are for containing your puppy when needed is step 1!
Puppy proof your house - puppies run around, they chew, they may pee or poop. Put away anything that you don't want chewed or anything that may be dangerous for a puppy. I recommend putting child safety locks on cabinets if you have chemicals under your sinks and making sure that all electrical cords are out of reach. Think safety first. Puppies are like toddlers, they are still discovering their world -, it is your job to keep them in a safe environment. If you have taken care of any safety concerns before your puppy comes home, then you can just enjoy your puppy.
Order your basic supplies. Here is are my recommended minimalistic items.
Prepare for potty training. We practice potty training with our puppies starting when they are 2 weeks old. They usually have a very good idea of where they are supposed to go to the potty by the time they go home, but sometimes problems arise. Usually, I find that listening too this podcast really helps you be prepared to help your puppy succeed.
