What are ENS and ESI?  Why are they important?

I suspect that if you have been looking to adopt a puppy, you may read breeders saying that they perform ENS and ESI on their puppies.  You may be left wondering, "What on earth are they talking about?"  So first, ENS stands for Early Neurological Stimulation and ESI stands for Early Scent Introduction.  These are incredibly important and simple protocols for building better puppies.

First we are going to look at what Early Neurological Stimulation is and how it benefits your puppy.  Starting on day 3 after the puppy is born, we take our puppy away from the mother.  We very carefully hold the puppy head up for a few seconds.  Next we flip the puppy head down for a few seconds.  Then we put the puppy on his/her back.  The fourth exercise is tickling one foot of a puppy for a few seconds.  Lastly, we place the puppy on a chilled towel.  Each "exercise" lasts 3-5 seconds, so this ENS literally only takes less than a minute for each puppy everyday.  We continue doing this everyday until the puppy is 16 days old.

You may question how beneficial these exercise may be for the puppy and what benefits can possibly be attained in less than 30 seconds for 14 days.  Studies show puppies who received these steps to stimulate their neurological systems, when compared to those who did not even when the puppies were from the same litter,  have an easier time handling stress, have a better immune system, stronger hearts and better heart rates, and better adrenal glands.  When placed in stressful situations they were more resilient and calm.  With so many benefits for your puppy in simply a few minutes a day, you can now understand why breeders are quick to tell you that they give their puppies ENS. Why wouldn't we take a few minutes to help your dog have a calmer, better adjusted life.

So hopefully, you now have a better understanding of why breeders talk about (ENS) early neurological stimulation. On a personal note, while we find ENS beneficial for our Labradoodle puppies, we especially believe that it is tremendously beneficial for our Aussiedoodle puppies.  Aussiedoodles can develop a greater case of "nerves".  We have found that ENS eliminates this for most of our dogs.
