Raising Puppies with Intention to Be Lifelong Family Companions

F1 Labradoodle Puppies - Family Raised in Arizona
If you are the adventurous type, then a F1 Labradoodle may be a great dog for your family. My families love sharing pictures of their F1 Labradoodles having a great adventure: taking a hike, chilling around the campfire, spending a weekend at the ocean, running alongside a bicyclist. So wherever adventure calls you, your F1 Labradoodle will eagerly follow. See available Labradoodle puppies now.
Another reason why F1 Labradoodles are a great fit for the adventurous type is because having an F1 Labradoodle means accepting your puppy is a great mystery. Their genetic makeup from being a hybrid means that there is no exact predictability in their size, coat type, and how much shedding they will have. If I have learned anything in my years of breeding F1 Labradoodles, it is to expect the unexpected!
What is an F1 Labradoodle?
A F1 Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a standard poodle. This was the first "designer dog". Labs and poodles were crossbred starting in 1989 to help people with allergies who also needed a therapy dog. While we socialize puppies and try to give them a good foundation for service work, we personally think they are great family dogs because they are so smart and eager to please. Many of our puppy families love their F1 Labradoodle because they need an allergy friendly dog, but also have fond memories of a beloved Labrador, others love a lot less shedding, and some just love how sweet, intelligent and eager to please F1 Labradoodles are!
Why Do People Want a Labrador Retriever / Poodle Mix?
Labrador Retrievers are one of America's favorite dogs for a reason. They have calm, trusting personalities and they love to be a part of the family. While they love (and need) a good daily walk and a good game of fetch, they are also content to be with you and to relax with you. I love that my labs enjoy playing fetch with me and enjoy a nice long walk, but that they also aren't super high needs. They can self entertain while I am cooking dinner or playing with the toddlers and they just enjoy lounging around the house with me.
The poodle contributes a keen intelligence, eagerness to please and his hypoallergenic coat. Poodles are considered the 2nd most intelligent dog, not only because of how smart they are, but because they are highly trainable. This helps contribute to the overall temperament of the Labradoodle puppy, making them easy to train and eager to please their new family.
Are F1 Labradoodles Good for Families?
You may wonder why the 50/50 Labradoodle hybrid is beloved by many families. In my experience, temperament is what draws most of my families to choose an F1 Labradoodle. Many of them have fond memories of a friendly Lab that they knew in their youth, but they want less shedding. Some of them have always had a family Labrador, but they want a little more brains and trainability. Others are searching for a dog with a calm, even-keeled temperament, which is our goal for our F1 Labradoodles.
Breed alone is not the only key to a good temperament, though it definitely seems to be a foundational piece. I believe that raising our puppies in the middle of our living room with daily interactions with our 10 kids is part of why our puppies have such wonderful, calm and friendly temperament. We raise our F1 Labradoodles with the specific intent of making them the perfect family dog, but our families love to let us know that we are succeeding - that our F1 Labradoodle puppies grow up to be wonderful family dogs for people of all ages. Our reports are that they are calm, patient, kid friendly, easy to train and eager to please. They do well with families who have never had a dog before and for long time dog families alike. We receive excellent reports from our families that have young children, our families that run a business and have their dog as a part of it and our retirees who want an adventure companion who does well with their grandchildren.

How Big Do F1 Labradoodles Get?
F1 Labradoodles come in a range of sizes. Because of their unique genetic makeup, the size range can vary and it is fairly unpredictable. In general they are divided in to standard size 50-65+ lbs, medium sized 35-50 lbs, and mini less than 35 lbs. We currently raise medium sized and and standard sized F1 Labradoodles. Our parents Nova (50 lbs) and Dutch (22 lbs) will produce our smallest F1 Labradoodles. Our parents, Molly (65 lbs) and Rusty (42 lbs) or Georgia (60 lbs) and Rusty (42 lbs) produce our larger Standard sized.
What Kind of Coats Do F1 Labradoodles Have?
F1 Labradoodles are unpredictable in size and coat type. There is a range of coat types within the breed and in general we have found that there are three main coat types.
1. the fleece or wavy coat
2. the wire haired coat
3. very straight hair
All are very popular with our puppy families for various reasons. The wavier the puppy, the less shedding and the more allergy-friendly they are; while the straight haired puppies look more like a lab and tend to have considerably less shedding than a full Lab. The wire-haired and straight haired puppies also require less grooming than their wavier counterparts. Our reports from most of our families is "no shedding" from the fleece haired labradoodle puppies. Our families with the wire-haired labradoodles and straight haired labradoodles report minimal shedding; less than 1/4 as much as many of them experienced with their non-doodle dogs.
